Last night was the final episode of Attack of the Show.
When I was a kid, Tech TV was my ESPN and The Screen Savers was my Sports Center. My adolescence nerdom was guided, molded by Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton. They taught me who Kevin Mitnick was and introduced me to Digg before Digg was big and before Kevin Rose admitted it was his creation.
I grew up a little, Tech TV turned into G4, The Screen Savers became Attack of the Show, and I still watched. Even in the last year AOTS became my go-to daily resource for updates from all the places I get to play each day: gaming, mobile, digital culture, lolz, etc.
As I watched the final minutes of yesterday’s live show I got choked up. Like, all over body chills for a full minute. At the end of the broadcast AOTS paid homage to The Screen Savers, bringing back Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton (2:50 in) for a quick cameo. It was a powerful moment for me. One of those moments that feels like a time warp. An almost out of body type thing. Clarity.
I felt this crazy connection to my childhood. Felt the full weight of just how lucky I am to do what I love. To do what I have always loved. It was as if 13 year old me had just walked into my living room to give me a high five and say “Dude, you are doing it! This rules!”.
So thank you, The Screen Savers & Attack of the Show, for helping me remember my origin story.
